Recognized nationally for its comprehensive curriculum and innovative approach to music education, Project 440 is a creative youth development program that helps young people use their interest in music to forge new pathways for themselves and ignite change in their communities. Our four celebrated programs (Doing Good, Instruments for Success, Annual College Fair for Musicians, and Youth Advisory Council) support our vision that through music, every young person is provided the tools for individual growth and community impact. At Project 440, we are excited about our work, and currently seek a Managing Director equally enthused to help us grow the breadth and depth of our programs.


The Managing Director (MD) is a leader who works closely with the Board of Directors, committees, and Executive Director (ED) to ensure the sustainability and growth of Project 440’s operations through administration, communications, financial management, and fundraising. MD manages the Program Director (PD), Development Director, and interns for the organization. Together, MD and PD are responsible for implementing dynamic, youth-focused programming. MD is responsible for advancing the relationship with partner organizations, government agencies, local education institutions, community groups, and the young people of Philadelphia.


  • Leadership & Organizational Management
    • Work closely with ED and board of directors to advance ongoing strategic planning process and implement current strategic goals.
    • Work in close collaboration with the Project 440 Board of Directors to meet the goals of the organization.
    • Plan, attend, and participate in each meeting of the Board of Directors, and Committee meetings as -desired by Committee Chairs.
    • Collaborate with PD to plan and implement programming.
    • Plan, coordinate, and participate in staff meetings on a biweekly basis.
    • Coordinate schedules between teaching artists, staff, and partnering organizations.
    • Develop systems for managing all aspects of operations of the organization.
    • In collaboration with Board of Directors, develop measures and tools for analysis of program effectiveness.
    • Ensure filing of 990, BCO and Form 5500.
    • Maintain appropriate insurance policies, issuing contracts, and managing payroll.
    • Recruit and supervise interns.
    • In addition to interns, the role manages both the PD (administrative components) and Development Director for the organization.
    • Maintain professional knowledge by attending educational workshops and conferences, establishing a personal network.
    • Reports to ED and Board of Directors.
  • Fundraising and Communications
    • In conjunction with ED, identify and help cultivate individual donors and prospects, help plan special events and fundraisers.
    • Complete grant writing activities, providing necessary information, language, budgets, and financial reports.
    • Complete specific grant requests for institutional support.
    • Maintain and promote Project 440’s relationships with partners and collaborative organizations, including government entities, community organizations, teaching artists, and staff.
    • Maintain and update website, post to social media sites on a regular basis.
    • Work to increase organization’s visibility and brand identity on local and national levels, including marketing organizational events and activities, and creating an organizational newsletter.
  • Financial Management
    • Keep accurate financial records, send monthly financial reports to the Board Treasurer, and keep ED apprised of financial state of the organization.
    • In collaboration with ED, PD and Board of Directors, create and track budgets for operations, programs, and proposals for funders and partner organizations.
    • Produce financial reports for meetings of the Board of Directors.
    • Collaborate with external bookkeeper to maintain appropriate and accurate financial records
    • Introduce proposed annual budgets for the Board of Directors as well as documents reflecting budget vs. actuals.

The Ethics Sliding Scale

Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows I am all about ethics.  Ethical behavior is the backbone of trust:  it is hard, if not impossible, to trust someone—or some organization—that doesn’t operate from a platform of ethics.  Nothing will erode the trust in someone or in an organization faster than the revelation that s/he/it engaged in unethical behavior.  If you have any doubts about this, just look at the impact of the Great Recession on people’s trust in financial institutions:  according to two researchers from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, in 2009 and 2010, only 44% of.
