JoB Description

The Director of Marketing, Communications & Membership directs the marketing, communications, public relations initiatives for Mt. Cuba Center (MCC). This role will serve as brand ambassador to drive interest and engagement in the mission of Mt. Cuba Center. This position leads membership and fundraising programs for the organization. This position works collaboratively with the senior leadership team to lead the organization in carrying out the strategic goals and founding intention of Mt. Cuba Center.


Essential Duties:

  • Marketing & Communications
    • Develop, execute, and measure marketing plans and communication strategies for the organization; This includes advertising, promotions, press management, published communications, social media efforts, and other public-facing communication programs through a variety of mediums
    • Direct and design internal and external branding initiatives throughout the organization, including style and communication guides
    • Oversee the design, content, and management of the Mt. Cuba Center website
  • Public Relations
    • Establish and maintain relationships with industry influencers and key strategic partners and act as official spokesperson for Mt. Cuba Center
    • Oversee all public relations programs for the organization; Craft messages to meet outreach needs
  • Membership & Fundraising
    • Direct all aspects of the membership program and collaborates with multiple departments to execute and coordinate the program
    • Lead fundraising efforts and revenue-generating programs when defined as a strategic priority for the organization
  • Staff Leadership
    • Recruit, lead, motivate and develop employees who can successfully collaborate with all internal and external constituencies to help achieve the core objectives, inclusive of making all personnel action decisions
  • Program & Project Administration
    • Oversee the envisioning, development, implementation and evaluation of strategies for furthering the achievement of MCC’s overall vision, mission and program goals, and direct all aspects of the execution of those strategies
    • Work cooperatively with the management team on adopting and implementing organization-wide systems, and help guide and execute the strategic goals of the institution to support Mt. Cuba Center’s mission
  • Strategic Partnership
    • Assist the Executive Director in maintaining MCC’s relationships with multiple external parties by interpreting and explaining MCC and its programs
    • Represent MCC in professional organizations and at professional and community meetings and events as requested
    • Serve as a strategic business partner by collaborating with the Board of Managers and serve on Board Committees to carry out the organization’s founding intention
    • Carry out other such duties as may be assigned or requested. Contribute to MCC activities as required. Actively participate as a member of Mt. Cuba Center’s community




  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business or related area and 7 years’ experience in marketing, communications, public garden management, or related field
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and public speaking communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Working knowledge of marketing and communication strategies
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Suite and ability to learn and adapt to various software and technology programs to complete work duties
  • Sound reasoning and judgment in making practical business decisions
  • Demonstrated ability in organizing, managing and motivating others
  • Ability to effectively fulfill organizational leadership roles and build meaningful partnerships
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong professional relationships and persuasively communicate with Mt. Cuba Center staff and the public
  • Self-motivated, organized, attentive to details, and the ability to manage time and effectively function without close supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays and special events as needed

The Ethics Sliding Scale

Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows I am all about ethics.  Ethical behavior is the backbone of trust:  it is hard, if not impossible, to trust someone—or some organization—that doesn’t operate from a platform of ethics.  Nothing will erode the trust in someone or in an organization faster than the revelation that s/he/it engaged in unethical behavior.  If you have any doubts about this, just look at the impact of the Great Recession on people’s trust in financial institutions:  according to two researchers from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, in 2009 and 2010, only 44% of.
