The Director, Finance and Budgets supervises a team of finance and accounting professionals to ensure that the AFSC’s program and administrative units are supported with efficient, accurate, and comprehensive internal reporting, financial research and analysis, grants fiscal management and compliance, budgeting and fiscal monitoring, general ledger accounting, and information systems. As a member of the finance department management team, the Director, Finance and Budgets collaborates with other key organizational stakeholders to develop, strengthen, and uphold AFSC policies and procedures that support strong financial decision-making and resource stewardship.


Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities of the Director, Finance and Budgets include the following:

  • Supervise a team of finance and accounting professionals that provide financial, grant, and budget support to AFSC’s global program and administrative units. When needed, perform regional controller role to own portfolio of regions and units.
  • Support regional and unit leadership with effective financial information, analysis, and guidance.
  • Maintain an understanding of regional operations and the impact of financial matters on programs. Assist and guide regional and central office staff in their understanding and analysis of financial information within multi-currency environments.
  • Actively participate in and help direct the annual budget and budget revision processes. Collaborate with regional and central office staff to monitor financial results against budget and identifying, explaining and resolving variances.
  • Help direct and actively participate in the Grants Management Team (Program, Development and Finance Departments). Provide grant support and guidance, including assisting with and actively supporting proposal budget development, designing and generating financial reports for grantors and audits, and identifying and collaborating to resolve grant compliance issues.
  • Manage grant audits. Coordinate other special purpose audits as needed.
  • Maintain and improve standard operating procedures for internal and grant reporting, grants fiscal management and compliance, budgeting and fiscal monitoring, and general ledger accounting functions.
  • Manage closing schedules, coordinate closing activities and organizational audit.
  • Ensure the integrity of internal financial reporting for regional and unit activity. Review and approve general ledger entries for reporting units: provide general ledger support to international regions. This includes (but is not limited to) expense allocations, cost distributions, transfers, adjustments, and revenue recognition.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve training materials and documentation of procedures. Deliver in-person and virtual trainings.
  • Be a technical resource for financial software systems, including but not necessarily limited to user account configuration and maintenance, upgrade and implementation support, as well as training development and delivery.
  • Leverage strengths and develop knowledge and skills of the finance department team with accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and other tools that are available for the understanding and communication of financial information.
  • Special projects as assigned by supervisor.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in experience, preferably in accounting, finance, or other related business field.
  • At least seven years of accounting and finance experience, with three at a management level, in a multi-divisional organization with international operations.
  • Experience working with annual operating budgets of $20 million or greater involving high volumes of finance and accounting transactions with allocations across multiple programs or projects.
  • International non-profit experience a plus.



Other Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to lead and mentor supervised staff.
  • Experience with grants fiscal management as it relates to compliance and reporting for domestic and international funders.
  • Experience coordinating audit activities, internal management reporting and developing budgets.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate quantitative information to audiences with diverse levels of financial sophistication.
  • Intermediate to advanced skill with data analysis, report design and the presentation of quantitative information.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skill with Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint or equivalent required. 5. Intermediate skill with Microsoft Dynamics SL (Solomon) or equivalent.
  • Ability to effectively document and improve work processes.
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision and cooperatively, as a member of a team. Must be organized and able to set priorities among a variety of tasks and to ensure timely completion of responsibilities. Able to work in a high-traffic area with frequent interruptions. Willing to work on various tasks as assigned.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule as needed. Ability to work overtime in peak periods required. Willingness and ability to travel internationally.

Compensation: Salary will commensurate with experience – Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
