Development Director

Harrisburg 17110, Pennsylvania

JoB Description

We’re seeking a dynamic development director to ensure the long-term success and growth of Spotlight PA, a new independent investigative newsroom in Harrisburg, Pa. The mission of Spotlight PA and its dozen-person team is essential: hold powerful private and public forces to account by producing investigative journalism that gets results and serves the public good. This exciting news initiative is supported by the Lenfest Institute for Journalism and other nonprofits in partnership with The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Lancaster Media Group.

Ideal candidates will have a track record of developing relationships and raising money from a wide variety of institutional funders. But this position is about far more than just fundraising. We’re looking for a leader who can elevate our brand of investigative journalism through content partnerships, events, public appearances and more. We value innovation, creativity and originality, and we’ll want this director to share our passion for the importance of accountability reporting and be able to articulate that to our funders and to the public.

While Spotlight PA is currently supported entirely from grants, we know this is not sustainable in the long run. This position will work closely with the editor in chief and the Lenfest Institute to formulate a long-term business plan oriented toward growth. That includes developing new relationships with individual or institutional funders, identifying new sources of income and implementing traditional and non-traditional forms of fundraising such as crowdfunding, sponsorships and memberships. Some other traits we’re seeking include, but are not limited to:

  • Superior communication and public speaking skills, and an ability to deftly handle all types of personalities
  • Careful attention to detail and the craft of clear, concise writing
  • Eagerness and dedication to help the newsroom succeed in any way necessary
  • Flexibility to be moving on many projects and in many directions at once
  • Respect for colleagues and a positive, solutions-oriented attitude

We know everyone reading this job listing may not fit exactly what we’ve described. Some might wonder if their skillset matches what we want, and others might choose not to apply even though they know they would be great at the job. We encourage everyone who shares our passionate commitment to public service journalism to submit an application and tell us why you’d be best.

This job is full time, includes benefits, will be based in Harrisburg and will report to the editor in chief.
