JoB Description

The Development Associate’s primary responsibilities are to provide support to the Development team and identify, track and manage a corps of volunteers for the benefit of the agency. Position is Full-time and reports to the Director of Development


  • Database Management
    • Process donations following agency protocols from data entry through acknowledgement
    • Backup DPO monthly
  • Marketing and PR:
    • Represent agency at community events, as needed
    • Take photographs and videos of activities and event and ensure photo release and storage protocols are followed
    • Prepare monthly reports as specified by the Director of Development
    • Assist with writing and creation of all publications both printed and digital
  • Volunteer Coordination
    • Recruit and manage all volunteers, interns and in-kind giving, including a remote based network
    • Facilitate volunteer orientation, workshops, trainings and background checks for volunteer positions
    • Manage the volunteer database to track hours, interest and reports
    • Facilitate all volunteer activities and events
    • Communicate with staff regarding volunteer needs, training and supervision within the organization
    • Develop and cultivate new and existing constituent relationships, including conducting outreach initiatives to expand volunteerism in support of agency programs
    • Plan and execute an informal and formal volunteer recognition program
    • Responsible for continuous improvement of the volunteer program
  • Additional Duties
    • Perform other duties as assigned
    • Attend Staff Meetings, fundraisers and Association events
    • Attend professional development webinars or on-site training


  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
  • Proficiency in donor database software and Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent writing, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Certification in Volunteer Management Desired
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends
  • Must be able to lift 40lbs
  • Must have clean driving record

Weighing the Role of Best Practices in Nonprofits

Over the past several months, I have been struggling with the question of best practices:  whose best practices?  And, do best practices really allow for flexibility and latitude when integrating them into the unique culture that exists in each of our organizations?
