Development Associate, Big Picture Philadelphia

Philadelphia 19121, Pennsylvania

JoB Description

The Development Associate is primarily focused on grant writing and grants management, with secondary responsibilities in communications. The Big Picture Philadelphia Development Office generates philanthropic support for the organization's two Philadelphia public high schools: Vaux Big Picture High School and el Centro de Estudiantes. The office is located at Vaux BPHS and work is performed at both locations as needed. The Development Associate will report directly to the Development Director, and have interactions with the Executive Director, HR/Finance Director, Operations Director, School Leadership Teams, teaching staff, students and the Board of Directors as needed. The part time position has flexible hours to 20 total per week, and is a contracted position.

Big Picture Philadelphia receives approximately two-thirds of its charitable revenue from foundations and corporations, and one third from individuals. Grant proposals range from under $10,000 to six figures, depending on program need. The progressive educational approach is project-based and focused on two signature programs: Real World Learning and Learning Through Internships. Each student at the lower grade levels engages in a Real World Learning class that exposes them to the world of work, engages them in a discovery process of their passions and interests, and guides them in the completion of competencies that prepare them for an internship. Upper grade level students secure a work-based internship that ties together goals of the business or organization where they work, and in-school requirements. Each student in an internship works alongside a Mentor and is supported by their Advisor (teacher) in the classroom. In addition to general operating needs, the Real World Learning and Internship programs are primary drivers of grant seeking. Funding is also sought for Resiliency and Post-Secondary support, Special Education, Out of School Time programs and technology needs.

The Development Associate will be primarily responsible for generating grant proposals, writing reports for grants received, researching prospective foundation and corporate partners, and general communications as needed with foundation and corporate partners. The Development Associate will maintain the grants calendar and Moves Management tasks within the donor management system in E Tapestry. Research is conducted through a variety of platforms and relationship networks, including Foundation Directory Online. Documentation is stored and managed in Drop Box with some departmental usage on Google Drive.

Secondary responsibilities for the Development Associate are in the area of communications, which is divided between departmental and organizational communications. Departmental communications include all reporting, inquires, and general communication with foundations and corporations. Organizational communications include acknowledgements, special events and digital media marketing. The organizational communications will be largely shared with the Development Director. Approximate scope of work by task will be: reports and proposal writing, 70%; research, 10%; administrative tasks and departmental communications, 10%; organizational communications, 10%.

Additional background that will strengthen an individual's candidacy include a knowledge of Philadelphia public education, workforce development in Philadelphia, and youth development. The Down Side of Giving

Posted by Laura Otten, Ph.D., Director on 22 August 2019, 9:05 am

When did giving become all about the donor and not about the nonprofit?   With all of the years behind me, no one could consider me naïve, so what could make me ask this question?  Is it just wishful thinking?  Or that ever pressing need to believe that people still really are decent, caring, compassionate?  We saw changes in people’s giving last year that seem directly attributable to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that nearly doubled the standard deduction, erasing the need in some people’s minds to actually make a charitable gift.  Get the deduction without actually giving?  Perhaps.
