JoB Description

Manage sponsored programs awards and contracts from setup of the account in the university’s financial system through award closeout. The Contract, Grants & Research Accountant is responsible for the operations of post-award administration and related accounting duties: serves as the appropriate principal investigator’s contact for grants and contract financial information. Communicates effectively with all levels of the University and outside constituents with a strong focus on customer service.


In accordance with the University's accounting policies, procedures, and compliance with sponsor and award terms and conditions:

  • Review and approve research proposals for private and governmental entities
  • Reviews contract proposals for private and governmental entities for compliance with the University's accounting policies and procedures and compliance with sponsor and award terms and conditions
  • Establish new funded awards or gifts and internal funded research accounts in the enterprise financial system.
  • Monitors time and effort reporting in compliance with applicable regulations
  • Maintain accurate and current record keeping on current funding for reporting and tracking purposes
  • Provide accounting support to the Office of Sponsored Projects, Principal Investigators and University departments as requested
  • Initiates invoices and monitors billings for awards
  • Prepares all fringe and indirect charges to awards
  • Approves purchase orders and invoices for awards
  • Initiates drawdown requests from governmental agencies
  • Maintain grant accounting software for accuracy
  • Provide training to Principal Investigators and University departments as needed
  • Maintain Post award accounting software for accuracy
  • Assist in year-end audit
  • Prepare external closeout reports for awards with governmental agencies and internal reports for Principal Investigators in a timely manner
  • Assists with periodic Facilities and Administration Proposals
  • Provide additional analyses and tasks as required by the Associate Controller





  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • Three years of experience in contract or grants accounting experience preferred
  • Experience with sponsored research
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements regarding post-award financial research
  • Ability to problem solve and multi-task in a deadline-driven environment
  • Experience with enterprise financial software, Workday is highly preferred
  • Expertise in Excel
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage develop and conduct training
